20th Anniversary: Final Fantasy VII by SquareSoft

Released on January 31st, 1997 for the original PlayStation, Final Fantasy VII would be the first 3D entry in the series.

Final Fantasy VII was an ambitious project to say the least. It started being worked on after Final Fantasy VI was finished in 1994. Though the game would be released three years later, it was unheard of to have a budget of $80 million and a team over 100 people to bring it to life. Originally to be released for the SNES, “Square, Co.” (SquareSoft’s Japanese business name) was excited for the CD-ROM storage capabilities of the PlayStation. This move allowed Final Fantasy VII to have access to use full motion video (FMVs) to help tell its story.
